A Dream Come True

The importance of traineeships...

Hi, I’m Sarah and I’m the second of three Wild Communities Project Assistants, as funded by the amazing Big Lottery Fund. I’m the muddy person you may have seen out and about postering for events, or perhaps we met on the reptile or beekeeping course over the summer, or you may have just read my blogs below!

I had volunteered for wildlife charities for years in my 20s, whilst working in various admin, hospitality and retail jobs. I was volunteering for another Wildlife Trust and paying my rent by cleaning and to be honest, getting quite down about ever making it into any type of wildlife conservation job, when I saw this traineeship advertised, as if by fate.

Fast forward 9 months and I’m in my final month, and still enjoying it as much as my first week. I even like the trundling bus ride to work through Ystalyfera, with its views to the Beacons, and down into the hive of Ystradgynlais, which is strung with bunting in summer, Welsh flag coloured flowers throughout the year, and now Christmas trees as November draws in – it is a special place to work.

Part of my role in this project has been to increase others’ wellbeing through being in nature, but it has meant to world to me too. I am a different person to who I was 9 months ago, and that is largely down to my colleagues, who have become like a little family to me, encouraging me along the way and imparting their knowledge of the natural world. I have had the opportunity to go on courses (I’m now a qualified first aider and 4x4 out) and to work on 4 striking reserves each with their own unique character.

Aside from being outdoors in nature, the best part of the job has been getting to know the project's volunteers. I’ve especially appreciated their hard graft on workdays, knowing that it’s not always easy to get out in the cold and wet in the winter as a volunteer!

So, thank you to Brecknock Wildlife Trust and the Big Lottery Fund for this role. I am now able to move forwards into working in this area (I am moving on to work for a National Park) and I am excited that a third person will soon get the same chance after me.

Sarah :)
